Welcome to the Summer issue of the California Tax Lawyer! I hope many of you are making plans to enjoy a vacation, beat the heat, and spend time with friends and family this summer.

Each year, our Taxation Section Executive Committee elects a new class of board members to serve a three-year term. Last year our leadership team did not change since we were going to have an entire Executive Committee made up of people who had never planned one of our in-person events. So, a special thank you to the current Executive Committee members who signed up to volunteer for 3 years but ended up doing 4. We are delighted to announce that during our June meeting we selected an outstanding incoming class for the 2022-2023 year, and when the CLA Board approves of our selections then we can announce the new Committee members.

Our website has information pertaining to our Executive Committee, our Standing Committees, and other programs that allow you to get involved with the Section, including the Odyssey Mentorship Program. We look forward to having more people involved!

Below is a recap of recent events and important items for your review.

  • In November 2021, we hosted the 2021 Annual Meeting and Tax Policy Conference in San Diego, CA. You will see many highlights and photos in this edition showcasing this event. The feedback was wonderful, and the turnout in San Diego was much more than expected. We were delighted to have IRS Commissioner Rettig as our federal keynote speaker.
  • In February 2022, we held our annual Eagle Lodge West. This year's ELW was again a great event filled with collaboration between representatives of California's taxing agencies and the Legislature as well as private practitioners. We had some incredible discussions that we are hopeful

  • will once again help with continuing efforts at more efficient and fair administration of California taxes.
  • In April 2022, we held the annual Young Tax Lawyers Conference, virtually. Thank you to Natascha Fastabend and Keith Long for putting together another great YTL Conference!
  • In May 2022, we held our 32st annual D.C. Delegation. This was not easy in terms of logistics since some government agencies met in person in D.C., and others preferred virtual. Still, it was an awesome opportunity as our delegates presented their papers to attorneys at the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service, the Joint Committee on Taxation, IRS Office of Professional...
