MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

It is my pleasure to introduce this edition of the Criminal Law Journal. The first article, More than Civil Death: Considering Collateral Consequences in Federal Sentencing, is authored by Kaitlin D. Beck, a law student at The University of Chicago School of Law. Ms. Beck is the winner of the 2016-2017 Marshall Schulman Student Writing Competition. She has penned a wonderful article, one that will benefit the practitioner in federal court, and may be influential to courts tasked with imposing lawful sentences upon defendants facing harsh collateral consequences such as deportation. Can California Lawyers Ethically Light Up? is written by Wendy Patrick, another advisor and past Chair of the Executive Committee. These articles demonstrate the commitment of the Criminal Law Journal to publishing articles that will enhance the practice of California lawyers practicing in the criminal courts, and that will advance the goal of providing competent legal representation.

This is an exciting time for the Criminal Law Section. Proposed legislation now before the Legislature will make the Sections separate from the State Bar. The purpose of the change is to allow the State Bar to maintain a focus upon attorney...
