Message from the Chair

Avi Levy

My term as Chair of the Family Law Section Executive Committee ("FLEXCOM") began in August 2017 and will end with the California Lawyers Association ("CLA") Annual Meeting in September 2018.

As many of you are aware, as of January 2, 2018, the former 16 Sections of the State Bar and California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA), which collectively boast almost 100,000 members, moved forward together as CLA. Building on the historic work and numerous accomplishments of the State Bar Sections, CLA has established itself as one of the nation's leading bar associations and the voice for all lawyers in California.

In this first year in existence, CLA inaugurated its first Annual Meeting. The event followed in the footprints of the Sections Convention of 2017, and more than 30 years participating in the Annual Meeting of The State Bar of California. The CLA Annual Meeting took place in San Diego at the Sheraton San Diego Harbor Island during the weekend of September 14 and 15, 2018. The Family Law Section presented 3 programs for the CLA Annual Meeting: Getting More Out of Less: Family Law Discovery on a Budget; Understanding the New Tax Law and the Effect on Your Family Law Clients; and Proceeding Paperless in Family Law — The Extinction of Bankers Boxes and Exhibit Binders. A special thanks to our illustrious education team for pulling these programs together.

FLEXCOM's mission is to advance family law and its practice in California by providing content to our members to improve the quality and practice of family law in California, and most importantly, to observe, develop, and support the highest quality of standards in the provision of legal services for the benefit of the public. We pride ourselves on keeping our members up-to-date on cutting-edge legal issues affecting your practice, presenting educational programs, publishing definitive legal reports, opinions and practice guides, and perhaps most notably, analyzing and interpreting, as well as developing and refining new and existing California law through our robust legislative efforts. The Family Law Section has approximately 4,000 members, including public and private practice attorneys, in-house counsel, judges, governmental officials, law professors, and increasingly, law students.

2018 has been quite the year in terms of the educational offerings provided by FLEXCOM. This year our seminal live education program was titled "Family Law Essentials 2018; Making a Real...
