Soy rumbero de calle (I'm a street rumba singer) is the opening line on the latest release ted by veteran salsa singer/composer Miguel A. Barcasnegras, professionally known as Meñique.

A native of Panamá City, Meñique began singing as a child, accompanying his mother and stepfather. By his adolescent years, he was performing with La Sonora Panameña. His unique vocal timbre and improvisational ability landed Meñique a position as lead vocalist in the popular Kako y Su Orquesta during a visit by said U.S.-based band to Panamá in the late 1960s. Meñique traveled to New York City with Kako, and soon thereafter joined the Tito Puente Orchestra, while recording with Arsenio Rodríguez.
