In Memoriam: John Dunleavy leaves behind a distinguished legacy of service.

John Dunleavy, who served CalCPA and the CalCPA Education Foundation for 27 years, passed away Aug. 5. He leaves behind him a long and distinguished legacy of service to the CPA profession. "I, and many others, would not have become active in CalCPA if not for John," says Marc Parkinson, CPA, managing partner of Petrinovich Pugh & Company LLP and 2006 07 CalCPA chair. "He challenged me to take on a leadership role at the Education Foundation and CalCPA, and taught me a great deal about what it takes to make an organization successful.

"John was a quiet, behind-the-scenes guy and a terrific leader, who got the most out of people. He was also a great guy to just hang out with and a deeply caring family man. I can't say enough about what a positive impact he had on my life."

"John was caring, competent and committed to CalCPA and the Education Foundation," said Dennis Young, who joined the Foundation's board of trustees the same year Dunleavy became the Foundation's executive director. "When I was president in 1995-96, I could not. have asked for a better person to work with in furthering the Foundation's goals. That was the year we established (what is now) the VP card. It was a risk, but John was always forward thinking. CalCPA and all CPAs in the nation are better off because of his wisdom and wit."

The Foundation marked various milestones during Dunleavy's tenure. Among them:

* Creation of the Value-Priced Program, initially named ACE, which offers coupon books and unlimited CPE for one membership fee, reducing the per-class fee.
