Grants alert (cont.)
for the Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
Grants announcement to address the most signicant
environmental problems within the Great Lakes Basin.
Deadline: June 26, 2020.
Funds: $4.25 million total for up to 20 awards ranging
from $50,000 to $300,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; nonprot
organizations; state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; and independent school
districts; among others.
Areas: USDA said funding must be used to support
competitive projects that implement strategic, priority
actions within Forest Service authorities to restore,
protect and maintain the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Successful projects will address invasive species,
nonpoint source pollution impacts on nearshore health
and habitat restoration in coastal and riparian areas.

Melanoma, Technology Development
Partnership Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for the
Melanoma, Technology Development Partnership Award
(TDPA) announcement to encourage investigations
into emerging technologies to assist in the detection,
diagnosis, prognosis and, ultimately, treatment of
melanoma.
Deadline: Pre-applications, June 22, 2020; proposals,
Sept. 24, 2020.
Funds: Approximately $2.24 million total for
approximately two Technology Development Partnership
Award applications.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said the intent of the TDPA is to foster
collaboration between biomedical sciences and physical
sciences (e.g., bioengineering, computational science,
imaging science and bioinformatics) and spur progress
in the development of computational approaches,
bioinformatics, devices or knowledge-based products
or outcomes. DOD denes a “Knowledge Product” as
a nonmateriel product that addresses an identied
need in a melanoma; is based on current evidence
and research; aims to transition into medical practice,
training or tools, or to support materiel solutions
(systems to develop, acquire, provide and sustain
medical solutions and capabilities); and educates or
impacts behavior throughout the continuum of care,
including primary prevention of negative outcomes.

Melanoma, Team Science Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for
the Melanoma, Team Science Award announcement
to advance studies in melanoma through a
multidisciplinary team, bringing together disciplines to
foster a novel approach to melanoma research.
Deadline: Pre-applications, June 22, 2020; proposals,
Sept. 24, 2020.
Funds: Approximately $2.24 million total for
approximately two Melanoma Research Program (MRP)
Team Science Award applications.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said to be considered for funding,
applications for the FY20 MRP Team Science Award
must address at least one of the focus areas: prevention
of melanoma initiation factors (e.g., UV radiation);
prevention of melanomagenesis and precursor
lesions (e.g., novel genetic and epigenetic drivers,
oncogene-induced senescence); understanding the
tumor microenvironment, such as primary tumor,
regional nodes and distal nodes; bioengineering
(e.g., computational, imaging) approaches to address
diagnostics, high-risk markers, dormancy and
metastasis; therapeutic prevention (e.g., interruption of
disease progression, recurrence); and minimal residual
disease (e.g., chemoprevention, micro-metastasis).

Melanoma, Research Program Idea Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications
for the Melanoma, Research Program Idea Award
announcement to support innovative, untested,
high-risk/potentially high-reward concepts, theories,
paradigms and/or methods in melanoma research.
Deadline: Pre-applications, June 22, 2020; proposals,
Sept. 24, 2020.
Funds: Approximately $4.32 million total for
approximately nine Idea Award applications.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said the purpose of the Idea Award is
to generate novel research avenues for investigation.
The proposed research project should include a
well-formulated, testable novel hypothesis based on
strong scientic rationale and study design and is not
intended to support a logical progression of an already
established research project. A key characteristic of this
funding opportunity is innovation, such as innovative
research that may introduce a new paradigm, challenge
existing paradigms, look at existing problems from new
perspectives or exhibit other highly creative qualities.
