MARK L. GIBSON

First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Platte County, (MO)

Responsibilities

In addition to handling my own caseload of serious felony cases, I supervise 12 attorneys. Platte County, the fastest growing county in Missouri, has a population of approximately 110,000 people. It is one of the five metropolitan counties comprising the Kansas City metropolitan area.

I have frequently presented seminars on sexual assault prosecutions, courtroom testimony, jury selection, and Brady/Giglio issues to law enforcement officers, medical personnel, and fellow prosecutors. I also serve as a legal instructor at the Kansas City. Missouri Police Department Academy.

1 What was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?

While I waited for my bar exam results in 1991, I sold hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, and soda in the stands at Kauffman Stadium, home to the Kansas City Royals.The highlight was watching Bret Saberhagen's no-hitter on August 26, 1991.

2 What is your proudest professional moment?

I could choose from many, but I was particularly pleased to secure a first degree murder conviction in 2020 for a family of four teenage children whose mother killed their father in 2007. Justice was a long time coming for those kids.

3 What do you like most about being an NDAA member?

It gives me great satisfaction to belong to an organization where the pursuit of justice for everyone, regardless of race, gender, creed, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, is paramount.

4 What are your hopes for the Prosecution Profession?

I hope that we prosecutors always get better when...
