When First Lieutenant Alonzo Cushing went off to fight for the Union during the Civil War (1861-65), he told a cousin "I may never return," but "I will gain a name in this war." He was right on both counts. He died in 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg--which turned the tide of the war in the Union's favor.
