HSBA HAPPENING

February Board Action Summary

The HSBA Board decided on the following actions at its meeting in February:

• Will await a recommendation from the Board's subcommittee that is reviewing the judicial retention policy as to proposed revisions to such policy. In connection with any such proposed revisions, this subcommittee will consider the suggestions from individual representatives of the Judicial Selection Commission ("JSC") that the HSBA provide more impactful information to the JSC.

• Will complete a Keller analysis and discussion after a final version of House Resolution 21 is passed. HR 21 urges the Hawaii Chapter of the American Judicature Society and the HSBA to analyze and assess the role of the Judiciary within the constitutional framework of government in the State of Hawaii.

Lawyer Referral & Information Service ("LRIS")

With over 43 years' experience, the LRIS continues to provide a service to both bar members and the public looking to retain an attorney. Although the majority of inquiries are handled by LRIS staff during normal intake hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 p.m. at 808-537-9140, those visiting the website at http://hawaiilawyerreferral. com, may conveniently contact the service by sending a message to LRIS@hsba.org, or using the online LRIS intake form.

Annually, the LRIS receives over 16,000 inquiries for assistance. After intake, over 80% of these inquiries are referred to panel members. Although requests for Oahu lawyers are always in demand, over one-third of the LRIS requests are referred to neighbor island attorneys. This growing need provides a great opportunity for bar members to grow their business with clients who are prepared to pay for legal service, as well as gain new and repeat business.

Members who subscribe to LRIS may choose from 14 major categories of law and select as many subcategories. Basic registration of $325 includes four major areas of law and 12 months of referrals. To join or for more information, email LRIS@hsba.org or visit the website at http://hawaiilawyerreferral. com.
