Marion Bass Securities Corp.

The slowing economy hasn't stopped two Charlotte-based investment companies from going forward with plans for venture-capital funds aimed at new and emerging companies. They plan to raise a combined $50 million this year and spend it on companies across the state. Marion Bass Securities Corp. says it will raise $20 million for a fund to focus on emerging and mid-size high-tech companies. CapitalSouth Partners LLC, which offers second-round funding to regional companies, is planning to double its $30 million fund.

In the second quarter of 2000, Charlotte-based Carolina Broadband Inc. received more of the $597 million in venture capital invested in North Carolina than the rest of the state's companies combined.
