Grants alert (cont.)
Research on Emerging Technologies
for Teaching and Learning (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Research on Emerging Technologies
for Teaching and Lear ning announcement to fund
exploratory and synergistic research in emerging
technologies.
Deadline: Jan. 25, 2021.
Funds: $19 million for awards of up to $850,000.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: NSF said funding supports research that
includes but is not limited to articial intelligence,
robotics, and immersive or augmenting technologies
for teaching and learning in the future. The program
accepts proposals that focus on learning, teaching or
a combination of both. The scope of the program is
broad, with special interest in diverse learner/educator
populations, contexts and content, including teaching
and learning in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) and in foundational
areas that enable STEM (e.g., self-regulation,
literacy, communication, collaboration, creativity and
socioemotional skills). The program also encourages
projects that investigate teaching and learning related to
futuristic and highly technological work environments.

Marine Debris Research (DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration seeks applications for
the FY2021 Marine Debris Research announcement
to support eligible organizations to conduct research
directly related to marine debris through eld, laboratory
and modeling experiments.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Nov. 5, 2020; proposals, Feb.
8, 2021.
Funds: Up to $2 million in FY2021. Typical awards will
range from $150,000 to $300,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations; nonprot organizations; and state, local
and Native American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: DOC said applicants should propose research
that investigates and identies the critical input
pathways for marine debris introduction into the coastal
zone (shoreline or nearshore), including evaluation of
appropriate simultaneous pathways of riverine transport
downstream, surface runoff, stormwater discharge
and wind-driven transport, as well as degradation and
fragmentation of debris during transport.

CZM Projects of Special Merit Competition
(DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration seeks applications for
the FY2021 CZM Projects of Special Merit Competition
announcement to develop innovative projects that
further their approved enhancement-area strategies and
focus on national priorities.
Deadline: Jan. 15, 2021.
Funds: Approximately $1.5 million for ve to 10
proposals ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. The
maximum project period is 18 months.
Eligibility: Any coastal state or territorial coastal
management programs.
Areas: DOC said proposals must focus on one or more
of the following priority enhancement-area objectives:
Coastal Hazards—preventing or signicantly reducing
threats to life and property by eliminating development
and redevelopment in high-hazard areas, managing
development in other hazard areas, and anticipating
and managing the effects of potential sea-level rise and
Great Lakes–level change; Ocean and Great Lakes
Resources—planning for the use of ocean and Great
Lakes resources; and Public Access—planning to
improve public access to the coasts.

Eects of Sea Level Rise (DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration seeks applications for
the FY2021 Effects of Sea Level Rise announcement.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Oct. 16, 2020; proposals,
Jan. 7, 2021.
Funds: Approximately $1.2 million may be available in
FY2021 for two to four awards ranging from $200,000 to
$400,000 per year per proposal.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations; nonprot organizations; and state, local
and Native American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: DOC said here are two distinct focal areas for
this solicitation: (1) coastal resilience and (2) surface
transportation resilience. Coastal resilience priorities
include but are not limited to: quantifying the vulnerability
of coastal communities, infrastructure and ecosystems
due to sea-level rise (SLR) and inundation, based on
shoreline condition through the advancement of existing
predictive approaches, eld-based studies and/or
dynamic models; and quantifying the social, economic
and/or ecological benets that natural and nature-based
features (NNBFs) provide for communities, infrastructure
