The charm of this story is that it is about a teenage girl who loves manga and creates her own. As the story begins, Maddy is miserable, trying to adjust to a new school, a new town, and the dissolution of her family. Her grandmother has taken them in, and she is a difficult old woman. Maddy's mother is miserable too, and working all the time. That leaves plenty of time for Maddy to spend online playing an interactive game, Fields of Fantasy, in which she pretends to be someone quite different than herself--Allora, an Elfin princess with magical power. Now, this doesn't disintegrate into a story about the scariness of the Internet connecting young girls with stalkers. (There are some warnings.) Instead, it is about how Maddy...
