Make your home allergy-proof.

There are more than 20,000,000 allergy sufferers and 10,000,000 asthmatics in the U.S. Although the majority take medication to control their symptoms, not many incorporate environmental control measures to reduce exposure to allergens, according to Ellen L. Garibaldi, assistant professor of internal medicine in the division of allergy and immunology, St. Louis University School of Medicine.

"Environmental allergy avoidance is always better than taking medication that you may be able to do without. While these measures can improve the quality of daily life for people with nasal allergies, they are absolutely critical for asthmatics, since exposure to environmental allergens over a period of time can cause major health damage."

She recommends the following measures to cut down on exposure to dust, pet dander, mold, and pollen in their homes:

* Clean the pan under the refrigerator with bleach weekly.

* Encase pillows, mattresses, and box springs in zippered, dust-proof covers.

* Remove all carpeting in the bedroom. If this is not an option in your home, consult your allergist about the best powder and spray combination that will kill dust mites and reduce pet dander in carpeting.

* Wash blankets, linens, and bed-spreads in scalding hot water every week. Avoid wool and down bedding.

* Use a dehumidifier in the basement to help reduce dust mite levels.
