Jeff Greenfield's otherwise entertaining review of Anthony Everitt's Cicero ("Low Roads Lead to Rome," June) is marred by an unfortunate error. He writes: "Much of Cicero's public life appears to have been spent imitating King Canute, seeking to roll back the tide of disorder by preaching the virtues of Republican rule"--thus once again maligning poor old Canute.

Canute, in fact, showed the limitations...
