Strict laws, long sentences and a high poverty rate are factors that have contributed to Louisiana's high incarceration rate, reported Corrections Directions. A new partnership with the Pew Center on the States will evaluate Louisiana's high incarceration rate and find ways to reduce the number of people in prison while making more efficient use of the state's budget that is allocated to prisons. Louisiana currently spends more than $660 million housing prisoners.
