The article "Rescue Mission" [p. 12 of the magazine] details efforts to revive some Native American Languages in the U.S. According to the Linguistic resource Ethnologue, there are 6,909 Languages worldwide spoken as a "mother tongue"--the primary Language in the home. In the past five years, 163 additional Languages have been identified in the Ethnologue and 166 Languages have been removed: 75 have merged with other Languages, and 91 have no remaining speakers.
