July 3--The number of people living on less than $1 a day appears to be rising and will reach 1.5 billion by year-end as a result of the economic crisis in Asia and its aftermath, the World Bank said yesterday.

"Today, countries that until recently believed they were turning the tide in the fight against poverty are witnessing its re-emergence," says World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn.
