In this issue of Utah Business, we are proud to present our second annual Green Business awards program. This special recognition feature honors 19 of the state's greenest companies, initiatives and people. We think you'll agree that their efforts to be sustainable and promote environmental awareness in the workplace and community are worth applauding. Read about their efforts and impacts on page 42.

It's no secret that most companies are experiencing tough times, with many executives working tirelessly to stay out of the red. So how are the Green Business companies able to continue their green efforts? Should going green really be a priority? The answer for many is simple: yes. The Green Business companies, along with many others, have found that though there are initial costs when implementing sustainable practices, there are numerous benefits in the long run.

So what can your small or large company do to go green? It might be easier (and less expensive) than you think. When reading through the numerous nominations we received for our Green Business awards program, the editorial team was continually amazed at the innovative ways companies, communities and individuals were working to reduce their carbon footprint. Unfortunately we weren't able to honor everyone, but there were many easy and cost-effective ideas that you may be able to put to use in your company.

For example, Salt Lake-based Eliot Management Group is taking green steps by using only environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, adding eco-friendly corporate apparel options, and initiating paper and printer toner recycling programs.
