I found Brian Gilmore's "A Love Supreme" (December issue) to be a challenging and valuable piece. I didn't agree with all of his points; he seems to be working from a fairly narrow idea of what jazz should be, which denies its own organic nature. He also limits his discussion of its potential to a direct connection to African American heritage, its proper roots, of course, but a view that leaves out important and artistically beautiful extensions of the art form such as the...
