The game includes 21+ 3D events; 10 classic retro-styled 2D events; story mode with hours of gameplay; and wacky, unlockable minigames and guest characters. Plus, there are brand new events for Tokyo 2020: skateboarding, karate, surfing, and sport climbing. Special-themed Olympic Dream Events contain a certain level from the Super Mario or the Sonic The Hedgehog series and feature dream-like gameplay, including Dream Shooting, Dream Racing, and Dream Karate. In Story Mode, Dr. Eggman and Bowser have formed a powerful alliance in their latest plot to defeat Mario and Sonic and includes both retro 2D and 3D events, wacky-fun mini-games, guest characters, and Olympic Games trivia. During the story, the "Tokyo 1964" game console takes players to another dimension, showcasing 8-bit and 16-bit graphics and character sprites from the Mario and Sonic franchises. Classic 2D-style events pay homage to the last time the Olympic Games took place in Tokyo. Exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, the game is rated E10+ for cartoon violence.
