LIFE & HEALTH: Nearly 39 Million Non-Elderly Americans Now Without Health Insurance--Private or Public--Up From 36.3 Million In 1991.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nearly 39 million (38.5 million) Americans under age 65 (17.4 percent of the non-elderly population) did not have private or public health insurance during any pan of 1992, according to Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) tabulations of the March 1993 Current Population Survey (CPS) I, which are the most recent. data available on the health insurance status of the V.S. population. The number of non-elderly Americans without health insurance has increased from 36.3 million in 1991 (16.6 percent), 35.7 million in 1990 (16.5 percent), and 34.4 million in 1989 (16.1 percent). A primary reason for the 1992 increase in the number of uninsured is a decline in coverage among individuals (and their families) working for small firms, EBRI said. The CPS is conducted by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

The March Current Population Survey (CPS) questions individuals about their health insurance coverage throughout the preceding calendar year. Respondents to the 1993 survey were instructed to proride information about their health insurance coverage during 1992.
