You asked for local success stories about what is working in our communities. In Galway, NY, poetry brings people together and raises funds for our small library.

Volunteers in the Story Quilt project have been working with community members of all ages, collecting their memories and stories about the area. These are then written as free-verse poetry. Funded by grants from a county arts council, workshops with professional poets were held at the Galway Public Library for those who wanted to learn to write their own poems based on their memories.

Poetry readings were held throughout the process, which gave people a chance to hear what their neighbors were writing. Now, in the third year of the project, selected poems are being published in a book called Story...
