What you owe them

The following statement from Outlook in the March issue is a disgrace to the American worker.

BNC: Many Latinos are here illegally. How does that affect worker-manager relations?

Donald Tomaskovic-Devey: The more vulnerable and scared your workers are, the less likely they are to complain.

That type mentality in any type of business is totally uncalled for. You do not need to threaten people or hold something over their head to get them to do a good job. We need to tell people up front what is expected. If they accept the job, work with them, pay them a good day's pay for a good day's work. If things are not working out after going out of your way to help them (that's your job as a supervisor), tell them. Give them the opportunity to resolve the problem with your help. If the problem cannot be resolved, fire them and tell them why they are being fired.
