Keeping score

I read "A Fan's Notes" (June) and agree: UNC basketball was special. The problem is that institutions are built upon the legacy of consistency and vision, especially by the head coach or, in the case of a business, the CEO. Ken Lewis, as great a job as he is doing at Bank of America, will never be as fondly remembered as Hugh McColl. Hugh was about building a colossus for shareholders and for Charlotte. There were intrinsic values being created, including the pride of a city on the rise. Ken Lewis is a caretaker, who must focus only on the numbers.

Flight numbers

A Regional Report item in your June issue states that "RaleighDurham International Airport lost six daily flights because of lagging passenger traffic caused by war with Iraq." The truth is that RDU has gained and is gaining service, not losing it. The conflict in Iraq was short-lived, the warfare there is over, and air travel is picking up again despite the federal government's continuing cries of "the terrorists are going to get you."

Of rocks and Iraq

I have enjoyed your magazine for several years now. I find the reporting to be both interesting and balanced. In particular, I always look forward to Up Front. I thought what you had to say in the May issue ("Gravity's Rainbow") was the best yet. In fact, I thought it was the best thing I read from any source on the war. What you said struck a real chord and helped me put things in perspective.
