The Georgetown Journal of Law & Modern Critical Race Perspectives is proud to
introduce Volume 16. As we present this Volume, I am f‌illed with immense gratitude
for the collective effort that brought this symposium edition to fruition. This
Volume is the culmination of years of dedication, scholarship, and collaboration, all
driven by a shared commitment to advancing legal discourse on one of the most
pressing issues of our time: racial equity in education.
Seventy years ago, the Supreme Court delivered its landmark decision in Brown v.
Board of Education, holding that racial segregation in public schools was inherently
unequal and unconstitutional. This decision was a monumental step forward in the
struggle for civil rights, providing a beacon of hope for millions. However, the prom-
ise of Brown remains unfulf‌illed, as systemic inequities and racial disparities continue
to pervade our education system. Today, we f‌ind ourselves in a period where educa-
tion is not only a battleground for political ideologies but also a means of perpetuating
the hegemony of whiteness, relegating students of color to second-class citizenship.
Our symposium, 70 Years Later: Revisiting Brown v. Board of Education and the
Struggle for Racial Equity in Education, served as a platform to confront these per-
sistent challenges. Through a series of thought-provoking discussions and scholarly
contributions, we sought to explore how the law can be harnessed to address these
inequities and work toward meaningful solutions.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Volume 16 editorial board for
their unwavering dedication to this publication. A special acknowledgment is owed
to Chelsea Clayton, our Symposium Chair, whose tireless efforts made this symposium
an undeniable success. Her leadership, vision, and hard work have been nothing short of
inspiring.
As you engage with the scholarship in this Volume, I encourage you to ref‌lect on
the ongoing struggle for equity in education and consider how the law can be a tool
for justice and transformation. Together, we can continue the work of realizing the
promise of Brown and ensuring that every student has access to equal educational
opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support of our Journal and its mission. We hope
this symposium edition serves as both an inspiration and a call to action.
Sincerely,
Isabela S. Gibson
