Dear Fellow Members:

Most of this issue of Big News for Solo and Small Firms is devoted to technology-related solutions for us. The articles have some redundancy: For example, most of the authors emphasize the need to ensure security and the related ethics issues. But those issues are so important to getting and retaining clients—and avoiding a visit (or worse) from the Bar—that we decided the redundancy was well worthwhile.

In "It's Time To Get Onto the Cloud," Marc Jenkins provides us quite a bit of material, giving us the names of several vendors for each of ten different categories of products. When you are ready to dive in, and begin your due diligence to choose a vendor, you will want to have this article by your side.

For those of you whose practice involves medical records, you will find "Today's Medical Records Retrieval Technology for Small Firms and Solo Practitioners" by Chuck Dart quite helpful. Chuck explains the advantages of using a third-party vendor for obtaining and using these critical but very sensitive and highly protected records, and identifies key features that you will need from your vendor and its platform.

All of us will find Nicole Black's article, "21st Century Online Collaboration Tools for Lawyers," illuminating. Niki suggests various products for different aspects of online collaboration. The ability to work closely with clients and co-counsel, wherever they are, allows us to be more efficient and to eliminate any geographic limitations, key for expanding your client base, and competing with multi-office firms.

Last, but certainly not least, among our tech-related articles is "Moving to the Cloud to Improve Security, Reduce Risk, and Expand Your Practice" by Ellen Blanchard. Ellen addresses the advantages and the ethical issues related to the using the cloud...
