I enjoyed the article, "The Real Costs of Transportation." [Synthesis/Regeneration 43, 4-8--Ed.]

My default mode of transportation is a bicycle, although I do own an automobile that seldom sees the light of day and is not exposed to much moonlight, either. As a bicyclist, I regard automobiles as large, fast moving, dangerous, stupid beasts that can't see very well. It helps me relate to them in a safe and sane manner.

Automobiles are in direct competition with humans for oxygen, space, and now food. Their advocates are as powerful politically as they are in torque and speed. Especially in winter, when I see so few humans outdoors, it's easy to imagine that they have won.

Almost all of us are dependent on automobiles to transport our food and other necessities. The majority of people that I know could not...
