As noted in Ruth Conniff's article ("How the Left Can Win," August issue), many prominent leftists are fond of saying the Democrats have to get back to their old economic populist roots. This is folly. The Democrats are a somewhat less-terrible political party than the Republicans are, and they have some economic populist rhetoric in their past, not roots.

The only thing that makes Byron York "incorrect" in saying too many prominent leftists have "too many different notions of what the left needs to do to win again" is...
