"At the age of 33, I became a single mom with a young son after divorce. For a few months following the divorce, I attempted to keep the family home myself but, as a new business owner, I just didn't have the funds to pay all of my house and personal bills, including a mountain of debt," says Jenn Scalia, a visibility and growth strategist for entrepreneurs who went from struggling to get by to creating a seven-figure business within three years. She is the author of The Little Black Business Book.

"It came to a point where I had no choice but to leave the home and go back to live with my parents. It was an extremely low point, but not uncommon. At the time, I felt like the biggest failure and wasn't sure if I would recover from this huge setback in my life. Luckily, within 18 months, I dug my way out, got back on my feet, and paid off almost all of my debt. I also learned a lot of lessons about myself, my family, and life in general."

Gratitude. "One of the biggest lessons I learned and continue to cultivate daily is gratitude. I was lucky enough to have a supportive family that was able to take me in and provide for me and my son during this time. I didn't have to couch surf at friends' houses and my son was able to create a stronger bond with his grandparents. Looking back now, this time in my life was actually a huge blessing that opened up space for me to go after my dreams."

Allow time and space for healing. "After going through a divorce and having my life turned upside down, there was a lot of pain, anger, and regret welling up inside of me. Instead of rushing back into new responsibilities or relationships, I took this time to heal. I worked on myself; got more into personal development--reading and journaling. I...
