The Commission on Law and Aging

Commissioner Appointment Process

The Commission on Law and Aging has up to 15 Commissioners who are appointed

by the ABA President, for up to three one-year terms. The Chair may serve up to

three years as a commissioner and up to three years as Chair. We are

interdisciplinary. We try to maintain about a 50/50 mix of lawyers, and experts and

professionals in age-related fields.

The Commission can nominate persons to serve as Commissioners. The Chair and

Staff Director are asked for input on appointments. We have influence, but not

control. Ultimately the incoming ABA President assisted by a committee of their

choice, make the final selection for appointment.

Commissioners, Advisors and Liaisons, assume a responsibility to work to fulfill the

mission of the Commission. Their commitment is vital to the ongoing work of the

Commission. We deeply appreciate the input and expertise of our Commissioners,

Advisors and Liaisons.
