Winston-Salem leaders cheered three years ago when Downers Grove, Ill.-based Sara Lee Corp. spun off Hanesbrands Inc. Not only did the Twin City end up with the headquarters of a Fortune 500 company, the move hinted at stability for the apparel maker's 4,900 employees in Forsyth County. But it's not working out that way. The company says it will lay off 440 there by the second quarter of next year.
