What we now call Portland, Oregon, and Multnomah County are the traditional lands of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River. These Indigenous peoples were coerced into signing the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 and were later forcibly removed from their homelands to the Grande Ronde Indian Reservation.
