Taylor is an artist whose creative ideas have dried up. She is so disturbed that her wonderful grandmother is losing her mind and is in a nursing home that she cannot think of much else. Grams is the only mother Taylor has known, and Taylor's father is loving but sort of absent-minded, so Taylor feels hopelessly lost. She visits Grams at the nursing home, but it makes her angry to see Grams so changed. The story covers the end of Taylor's junior year and the summer before her senior year in high school. She is obsessed by loss and realizes she misses the boy next door, Bears, who had been her childhood companion and shared a love for Grams; now there are possibilities for them to pick up their friendship once more. And then there is Mike, who always flirts with her. She can't stand him, but wait--he is pretty cute.
