Those wishing to promote or study Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt have, for many years, been faced with the insurmountable problem of a lack of reliable and accurate textbooks. In the past decade this situation has started to improve with regard to many different aspects of later Egyptian, Greek, and Roman culture. In many respects the final stumbling block is Ptolemaic and Romano-Egyptian language and scripts. This is because of the complexities of the forms used by priests during these two periods and the fact that the periods are studied by many who do not specialize in Egyptology and so have no way of working from texts in their original form. An updated reference book that guides the reader towards translated texts is therefore most welcome. The book under review provides a useful service for both students and scholars alike. The list of monographs in the front of the volume is an extraordinary help in its own right, and the simple reference formula will allow non-German readers to access and utilize the text.
