The Southern Economic Association has decided to annually honor one or more faculty members for outstanding contributions to economic instruction on their campus and beyond by conferring upon them the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching award. The Award was instituted by the Board of Trustees of the Southern Economic Association in the fall of 2002.

We are pleased to announce two winners for 2010 for the Kenneth Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Awards. This year's winners have made very different contributions with their instructional activities.

Our first award goes to Paul Grimes, Professor of Economics at Mississippi State University. Professor Grimes has written extensively in the field of economics education and currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Education. He is a past President of the National Association of Economic Educators and is a winner of their Henry H. Willard Research Award. Professor Grimes is active in training elementary and secondary school teachers in his state through the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, with a recent focus on preparing teachers for state economic education mandates and establishing baseline measures of teachers' economic literacy. He is the author of an innovative textbook, The Economics of Social Issues (Irwin/McGraw-Hill). He also coordinated summer programs that brought at-risk high school students to Mississippi State's campus to prepare them for college with regard to planning and finances, as well as coursework. His work in teacher training extends to Russia, South Africa, and Paraguay.
