Jennifer Franz, energy efficiency specialist for Lennox Industries, Inc., Richardson, Texas, offers suggestions to help homeowners keep cool and save all summer long, no matter where they live:

* Ceiling fans, according to the Department of Energy, allow residents to raise the thermostat setting by about 4[degrees]F with no reduction in comfort. Many models offer wireless remotes and can be installed by the homeowner.

* Smart thermostats combine convenience with high-tech smartphone apps to help reduce electricity bills without requiring complicated programming. Some models can detect when occupants leave and return to the home and automatically adjust the system to an energy-saving mode, as well as monitor air quality in the home's zip code and turn the fan on when outdoor pollutant levels are high.

* Outdoor misting systems give homeowners the opportunity to enjoy their backyard all summer long while remaining cool in the heat. As mist evaporates, it can create a cooling effect of up to a 30[degrees]F difference.
