Professor Kathryn H. Jacobsen has been improving and expanding her
landmark textbook on global health. As a teacher and researcher, she identif‌ies and
addresses major global health challenges as they continue to evolve. Inputs from
students and experts are ref‌lected in the current textbook and provide an invaluable
learning experience for those interested in entering the f‌ield of global health.
The current edition of Introduction to Global Health builds on the second edition
and includes major revisions. While the second edition addressed the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) (Travis et al., 2004), the third edition has signif‌icantly
expanded to describe planned Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These
updates cover the MDGs’ progress toward reducing poverty and health disparities,
especially in child mortality, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other
communicable diseases.
The post-2015 SDGs serve as the backdrop to chronic health problems, which
are expected to plague the world’s aging population, and inform the structure of
the updated textbook. Professor Jacobsen presents a complete and detailed
description of the World Health Organization’s new global health agenda and its
priorities, including the socioeconomic and environmental determinants of health,
which underline the connection between health and human rights status.
Implementation of global public health initiatives is woven into each chapter of
this textbook. How people around the world are attempting to solve public health
problems and promote health and well-being are also discussed.
The third edition of Introduction to Global Health includes a presentation of the
full spectrum of topics that are now included as part of the global health agenda.
These topics identify links between the SDGs and global health priorities, the
socioeconomic and environmental determinants of health, the connections
between health and human rights, and the funding and implementation of global
public health initiatives.
In this textbook, Dr. Jacobsen describes interventions that foster sustainable
economic growth, support human rights, mitigate threats to security, and help
