Set against the backdrop of post-WW II, the story of Herr Hoffer and his family highlights the plight of many Austrians under the control of the Russian army in Czechoslovakia. Thirteen-year-old Elsbeth and seven-year-old Emil flee the Communist camp with Jaroslav, an older family friend. Shortly before the children's escape, Mama is sent to a labor camp in Russia, and the uncertainty of her fate creates constant suspense until the end. The road to the children's freedom is fraught with danger, and hunger is a constant companion. Jaroslov shares his previously hoarded food, and later, after fleeing from the wounded Emil, returns to carry the young boy safely to the border and a reunion with Papa. Recognizing Jaroslov's leadership potential, Papa sends him on some dangerous missions that ultimately guarantee the family's safe immigration...
