Nicholas Confessore's article, "Welcome to the Machine" (July/August), strikes fear into my heart with its suggestion that in Bush's Washington the "voice of the people" is an empty phrase. However, the public outcry in response to the Federal Communications Commission's proposed changes to restrictions on media ownership--and the impact of that outcry--suggest that ordinary citizens may yet have some voice.

I read Nicholas Confessore's "Welcome to the Machine" article and saw his July 1 interview on Fox News Channel. In the interview, Confessore seemed to assume that conservatives still back George W.
