The Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether public schools violate the Constitution when teachers lead their classes in the Pledge of Allegiance, which includes the phrase "one nation under God" ("Church & State," UPFRONT, 10/13/03). Last year, in a case brought by a California parent, a lower court ruled that the pledge was unconstitutional because the words "under God" promote a religious belief. The phrase was added to the pledge by Congress in 1954. Michael Newdow, an atheist, said he didn't want his 9-year-old daughter subjected to the pledge.
