Aloha,

Half full or half empty? How do you view your world? I like being positive. The year is nearing the mid-point and I say "life is good!" I would like to share with you some exciting moments that took place this past month.

The 42nd Annual Law Golf Tournament was held at Hickam's Mamala Bay Golf Course. The Grand Champion this year is Wayne Mau, a longtime member of the tournament committee. Dozens of lawyers participated in this goodwill outing. Next year's tournament will be run by the Hawaii State Bar Foundation. I applaud the committee members, Judge Gary Chang, Judge Melvin Soong (retired), Stephen Tom, Steven Chow, Wayne Mau, Randall Chung, Stephen Hioki, Allen Sagawa, Harry Nakaki, Amy Isobe, and Lisa Oka for their outstanding stewardship of this event.

The William S. Richardson School of Law held its 39th commencement ceremony. The legal profession is changing, and law school graduates face many challenges. Student debt is high, the job market requires patience, but the demand for legal services and assistance remains strong. I look forward to welcoming the newest members to our Bar and introducing them to the "aloha" style of practicing law. I encourage you to reach out to the next generation to share your thoughts and perspectives. This will enhance their skills, guide their road to a successful practice, and help them to be active in public service, pro bono, and in our bar association.

The 6th Annual HSBA Leadership Institute was launched, and 15 young lawyers will be introduced to community leaders, skills and concepts over the next eight months. Upon completing the course curriculum, these individuals will join the ranks of the more than 70 Leadership Institute Fellows who are serving and enhancing the legal profession.
