In January, Michael Perham, 14, of Potters Bar, England, became the youngest person to sail solo across the Atlantic. His father shadowed the 3,500-mile voyage from Gibraltar to Antigua in a separate vessel, but never went aboard the 28-foot boat. Upfront talked to the Year 10 student (the British equivalent of 9th grade) about his six-week journey.

Q What motivated you to sail. across the Atlantic?

A A few years ago, when the previous record holder completed the trip, I saw it on TV, and I thought it looked like great fun. For a few years, the idea was just drifting around. Then about a year and a half ago, I got into a position where it was financially possible to complete the trip. [The trip was sponsored by Skechers].

Q So what was it like?

A It was pretty mind-blowing. The thrill you get from sailing, and the freedom you feel, is just incredible.
