While Puerto Ricans need no excuse to celebrate and party to the beat of dance music and to the consumption of tasty edibles and alcoholic beverages (also true about all Latin American cultures), the winter holiday season is by tradition the official party time of the year. The parties take place from December 1 through January 8, known as "las octavitas" (eight days after the end of the year). The music of choice is the aguinaldo (similar to Christmas carols); jibaro music (Puerto Rican country music); bomba and plena (traditional rhythms of Puerto Rico), and salsa music.
