Grants alert (cont.)
Deadline: Sept. 30, 2020.
Funds: $5.8 million total for up to nine awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: NSF said there are two mechanisms for
support of in-service and pre-service K–12 STEM
teachers and full-time community college faculty:
(1) RET supplements to ongoing NSF Directorate
for Engineering and Directorate for Computer and
Information Science and Engineering awards and (2)
new RET Site awards.

Computational and Data-Enabled Science
and Engineering (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Computational and Data-Enabled
Science and Engineering announcement to identify
and capitalize on opportunities for major scientic and
engineering breakthroughs through new computational
and data analysis approaches.
Deadline: Nov. 16, 2020. See the announcement for
division details.
Funds: To be determined.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: NSF said areas of research include but are not
limited to those supported through the participating
divisions that address at least one of the following
criteria: promoting the creation, development and
application of the next generation of mathematical,
computational and statistical theories and tools that
are essential for addressing the challenges presented
to the scientic and engineering communities by the
ever-expanding role of computational modeling and
simulation and the explosion and production of digital
experimental and observational data; and promoting and
encouraging integrated research projects that create,
develop and apply novel computational, mathematical
and statistical methods, algorithms, software, data
curation, analysis, visualization and mining tools to
address major, heretofore intractable questions in
core science and engineering disciplines, including
large-scale simulations and analysis of large and
heterogeneous collections of data; among many others.

Human-Environment and Geographical Sciences
Program (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Human-Environment and
Geographical Sciences (HEGS) Program—Doctoral
Dissertation Research Improvement Awards to support
basic scientic research about the nature, causes and/
or consequences of the spatial distribution of human
activity and/or environmental processes across a range
of scales.
Deadline: Proposals are accepted at any time.
Funds: Up to $600,000 for up to 30 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: NSF said projects about a broad range of
topics may be appropriate for support if they enhance
fundamental geographical knowledge, concepts,
theories and methods, and their application to
societal problems and concerns. Recognizing the
breadth of the eld’s contributions to science, the
HEGS Program welcomes proposals for empirically
grounded, theoretically engaged and methodologically
sophisticated geographical research.

Marine Debris Removal (DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
seeks applications for the FY2021 Marine Debris
Removal announcement to support the development
and implementation of locally driven, marine debris
assessment, removal and prevention projects that
benet coastal habitat, waterways and NOAA trust
resources.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Sept. 4, 2020; proposals,
Dec. 4, 2020.
Funds: $2.5 million total for up to eight awards ranging
from $25,000 to $250,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations; nonprot organizations; and state, local
and Native American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: DOC said the highest program priorities for this
solicitation are the detection and removal of derelict
shing gear, abandoned and derelict vessels, and
medium- to large-scale marine debris that have a
negative impact on NOAA trust resources and important
habitat areas. Derelict shing gear includes but is not
limited to such items as abandoned crab or lobster pots/
traps, shing nets and synthetic (e.g., monolament,
polypropylene) line.
