Employers are now taking an average of 65 days to fill management positions, 60 for sales positions, and 40 to hire customer services positions, according to a survey of over 400 companies conducted by Caliper, a Princeton, N.J.-based human resources consulting firm. Regardless of what they are hiring for, employers say they are narrowing the reams of resumes they receive down to 10 candidates who they initially interview. From there, they determine the two or three most-promising candidates who they further assess and bring in for a second interview.

Herbert Greenberg, president and chief executive officer of Caliper, explains that "The companies who are hiring today have more choices than they've had in a long time. So they are doing everything they can to make the best possible decisions. They are checking resumes, administering personality profiles, performing background checks, conducting multiple interviews, then weighing their decisions very carefully."
