To mark the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's inauguration, the Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston unveiled the nation's first digitized presidential library.

The project required a four-year, $10 million effort to digitally archive about 200,000 documents; 300 reels of audio tape containing more than 1,245 telephone calls, speeches, and meetings; 300 museum artifacts; 72 reels of film; and 1,500 photos, according to USA Today. AT&T, EMC, Iron Mountain, and Raytheon supplied hardware, software, and technical expertise.

The online archives include the president's office files, personal papers, the JFK White House photo collection, the audio speech collection, and the film and video collection. The materials include thousands of historical papers, documents, and images from the nation's Civil Rights era, U.S.-Soviet Union Cold War conflicts, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, NASA's feat of sending a man to the moon, and the birth of the Peace Corps.
