New Jersey Acting Governor Has Unusual Powers.

Editor:

In your article (April 2001 issue) on New Jersey's temporary suspension of separation of powers due to the Senate president serving simultaneously as acting governor, I was paraphrased as saying that "it is inconceivable that the acting New Jersey governor, elected only by the voters in his legislative district, has more power than an elected governor." I did not say that it was inconceivable that this would be the case, since the whole point of my article was to point that that is precisely what the constitution requires. What I did say was that there was no conceivable rational basis for that being the case.
