More than 1,000 janitors, members of Service Employees International Union Local 254, struck in Boston and its suburbs September 30. They were demanding health insurance and full-time work. Only one of five unionized janitors in the area has a full-time job with health benefits. Janitors targeted Unicco, the city's largest cleaning company. Unicco's custodians make an average of less than $10 an hour. Its C.E.O. makes $1.2 million.
