Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

PositionCompany Profile

As summer ends, Jacobs Engineering wishes to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of the more than 20 small businesses who helped us complete environmental remediation activities at Department of Defense (DOD) sites statewide. As noted by Chris Williams, Manager of Alaska Programs, in the February 1995 issue of Alaska Business Monthly, Jacobs continues to embrace small business participation in its projects to assure DOD of a project team that knows the site conditions and is sensitive to local cultural practices and economic concerns.

This past year we hired local personnel and worked with Alaskan firms providing services, materials, and equipment for activities at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, and at remote locations such as the Indian Mountain LRRS, and Eareckson AS on Shemya Island.

Our commitment to hiring and contracting locally has been particularly evident at the Kotzebue LLRS, where our team is removing diesel fuel residuals from soils. The 11 people working on this project are from Kotzebue, Anchorage or Kenai. Glacier Environmental Services provided equipment for this program, and Lynden Transport, Southern Air Transport and Northern Air Cargo delivered treatment units, earth moving equipment, and construction materials. Environmental Management Inc. provided key equipment and labor in the field effort, and Analytica Alaska provided laboratory support. Alyeska Pump, Polar Supply, Alaska Pump and Supply, NC Machinery, Schelberg Safety Supply, Alaska Rubber Supply, and Alaska Pipe and Supply are other small businesses who assisted us on this project.

Recently, the Corps of Engineers awarded Jacobs a Total Environmental Restoration Contract (TERC) having a 10-year, $240 million potential value, for remediation and compliance work at DOD and federal facilities throughout Alaska. As prime contractor, Jacobs will service this contract with six team subcontractors and more than 70 prequalified specialty or small Alaskan businesses. Collectively, our Team has about 400 Alaska residents on the payroll and more than 100 years of construction and Arctic engineering experience.
