During this holiday season, I invite you to take a break from the stress and strain of the practice of law, and find a quiet moment to feel grateful for the privilege it is to be an attorney.

Pause to consider that, at a time of rapid change in the world and in the marketplace for legal services, we have the moral authority and ability to serve all members of society in need of our services. The citizens of Florida deserve affordable, accessible resolution of their disputes, and it is our duty to see that our courts are available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

Be mindful of the fact that as attorneys we serve in the third branch of government, the function of which is a vital check and balance to the other two. Our clientele depend on us to safeguard the democratic process and advance their individual rights and interests.

Reflect on the oath that each of us took, on becoming a member of The Florida Bar, which concludes: "I will never reject, from any consideration personal to myself, the cause of the defenseless or oppressed, or delay...
